I'm not sure but I think I needed an endorsement to submit as a grad student about 20 years ago, which is how I think I learned about the endorsement system. They do say "arXiv may give some people automatic endorsements based on subject area, topic, previous submissions, and academic affiliation."

It does seem to have tightened up lately. At least I am seeing more requests for endorsement and "you need an endorsement to submit to this category" messages

Yep. AI is DDoSing our knowledge systems. So everything is going to contract back to old school networking, which will only be possible in person because AI is also flooding online networks. You do the math on how this new-old system will distribute opportunities.
