the UN is a sexual harassment horrorshow that is extremely difficult to report on because the levels of revenge and vindictiveness involved intimidate even relatively well-positioned and socially powerful victims from speaking out in the record.

I'm ragging on academia for treatment of employees and general mismanagement but I want to be clear: the NGO sector as a whole is *even worse* and the UN in particular is full of horror stories.

this is extremely varied; World Bank or UN can pay very very well, small NGOs are often the other extreme - super exploitative of motivated staff

one of the other things i'll add here is that NGO salaries are GROSSLY over-inflated relative to the same typ of work in corporate sectors. i've seen salaries 3-10x higher than the market rate for the same work. pull some orgs 990s sometime.
