Well, at the time they were. A lot of the reason it was controversial is that she beat Miranda Richardson, Joan Plowright, Vanessa Redgrave and Judy Davis, all of whom were considered the sort of actress the Academy *should* be upholding over some Brooklyn-accented comedienne.
