I think the most succinct advice I ever heard was, if you don't start the relationship as poly, it is just not going to work down the line. Which makes sense since it really is a hard gear change to make as it is without the whole "FNG doesn't know our years old in-jokes about the butter"

Setting boundaries with family is valid too. You can care about someone and still protect your peace by deciding how much access they have to you. ❤️

I didn't entirely cut off my relationship with my dad sure. But I made it that I am the one who decides if we can talk, when, how long and how. It's completely not filial or whatever but at least I don't have to think about it or worry about it most of the time, he won't invade places I don't want -
