i have said this before but “It is not permissible under the 14th Amendment for the state to alleviate racial inequality” is basically a version of Plessy v. Ferguson, which held that the 14th Amendment was not meant to equalize social relations. bsky.app/profile/mike...
Show PostImportant point about the era of professional armies in democratic countries. Under universal conscription you didn't even have to ask the question, because every able-bodied man knew they'd be called up at some point. But if you're going to ask now, better clarify what exactly you're asking.
Show PostIn a country with a professional army, a survey like that is interpreted by people as follows: “Our army has already been defeated; should we carry on fighting?” If you have already lost, why keep fighting? And in real war, as you say, answer would be different.
Show PostI know some European countries score low on "would you want your country to continue fighting in the face of an attack where outcome is uncertain?", but to an extent that is what people say in peace, and if actually attacked the "let's draft our youth to beat the barbarians"-spirit tend to kick in.
Show PostI'm a great admirer of Kasparov, but this is just poor analysis. Are there anything indicating that other European countries would be weaker than Ukraine? Historically, attacking cities have rarely broken the spirit of the population or the leadership - and this includes in Europe.
