consider the common perspective of "well I can't make a difference, might as well not even try". that apathy is what the people in power want. it stops even the opportunity and desire for change dead in its tracks. the state has only ever ceded voting power to placate the masses, as a compromise...

voting in an oligarchy threatens power insofar as it allows voters to feel a sense of power, and gives them something to organize around. if you feel that you can make a difference voting, you're more likely to think you can do other things to make a difference too, and *that* scares the oligarchs.

One of my major fears about modern life is that so much of LGBTQIA culture is built around Meta websites, which are now increasingly openly hostile to us. How many drag queen troupes, queer events, and book clubs are based solely on Instagram for example?

I mean a lot of people share content that says these things (ironically, one place this abounds is a Meta platform, Instagram). Would they really defend that position if pressed? Perhaps not. Are they "serious thinkers"? I dunno, but they're often people who should know better!

I mean I don’t think any serious thinker on the left believes these protests or voting do not challenge power. That strikes me as a very fringe position that the vast majority of leftists do not hold, and certainly not a position that leftists involved with political organizing hold.
