They think it's the "natural" order of things. A lot of it is racism in that they think that Global South countries are incapable of self rule. But they also hate the idea of the US having any restraints on its desires.

also I think the mafioso instinct is more to divide up territory than compete for it, the rival mafiosos are the only people who can validate their own status. in theory they’re all kinda in it together. it’s just that they’re dumb and stupid and greedy so you get feuds and wars between them too
