I find it genuinely baffling how even if this was a growing trend (it isn’t) supposed intellectuals are more interested in assigning morality to it rather than analyzing it as a true cultural shift brought on by changing attitudes to family. That’s a much more interesting story!

My hot mom take is that normal parents (tm) are parenting kids through an incredibly awful moment in which there's a lack of mental health care, restrictive laws on how young people can express themselves, and AI everywhere (which teens hate!). But it's a boring story to say, moms, doing our best!

Interesting this kids cutting off abusive parents is an epidemic worthy of endless press coverage, but I've never seen hand-wringing op-eds about parents disowning their kids for being gay, transitioning, or having different religious beliefs.

To the extent columns exist mainly to air editorial/columnist anxieties, you do get a pretty funny progression from “affirmative action is bad” (my kids are applying for college soon) to “the woke campus mob” (my kids disagreed with me/dyed their hair) to this (my kids wont talk to me)
