it seems like her scams worked almost like chemotaxis, or like a plant reaching toward light. she moved towards things which made her feel comfortable and accomplished and away from things which made her feel conflicted (she seems to tolerate zero cognitive dissonance) or uncomfortable.

and the thing is that her total inability to describe the device in any detail whatsoever is consistent going all the way back to when people thought it was real. she spent years and years marinaing in a culture which was, at least, trying to build this thing, and _i_ could describe it better.

i do not know that she is manipulating anyone on purpose. it seems as though there is something very small inside her looking out through a tiny slit onto the actual world, and she is unaware that there is anything more to that world than her vague, gauzy impressions of it.
