Part of why Tao is being interviewed a lot is that he's got a popular book coming out, so presumably his publisher reached out to a lot of media. www.quantabooks.org/books/six-ma...
Show PostOT I wish we had more room in our media for people not approaching maths like athletes, but like writers, or architects, or painters. My corner of maths had so many painters when it started.
Show PostYup. The problem with him is that he somehow deluded himself into thinking the AI companies gave a crap about mathematics or any other human endeavor. He seems to realize and regret his mistake now, but it's been obvious for the entire time he's been tooling around with AI.
Show Postactually it is psycho and profoundly wrong to start going around and talking about mathematicians being out of work and made irrelevant and that is doing incredible damage to young people right now. Moreover it is actually fine and not shameful to worry about your job security…
Show Postjust profoundly stupid and weird and vaguely horrible in its implications to try to land on tao being unhappy because he is jobless. I think one of the strongest mathematicians to ever do it is probably not worried about his future job prospects actually unlike many current phds and postdocs
