It is also only about "excite" and "increasing", i.e., excitatory LTP. So it's the causal e-LTP, with no comment on the timing window. I would argue STDP, and behav-scales still as Hebbian.I find it insightful and teach-worthy. While at it, shout-out to Konorski for 'neuro-plasticity'.

The millisecond timing is STDP onwards. Hebb's definition, 'repeatedly or persistently takes part in firing' implies no timing window, and as such only talks about the causal side: pre-spike (cell A) followed by post-spike (cell B).

Classic Hebbian doesn't say millisecond. "When an axon of cell A is near enough to excite a cell B and repeatedly or persistently takes part in firing it, some growth process or metabolic change takes place in one or both cells such that A's efficiency, as one of the cells firing B, is increased"

And, before @neurosutras.bsky.social brings this up (because he is one of THE experts), the "millisecond" aspect of the original statement is quite debated with behavioral timescale synaptic plasticity, which acts on longer timescales.

In the end, it depends what you want to transmit. You could say that there are some ideas how this could work, but they are subject to debate and ongoing research. But I understand that you don't want to write in your book everywhere "this is not understood" ;-)
