(Related to this is the difficulty basically every GSG or 4X I've ever played has in simulating real frontiers that require regular 'frontier maintenance' and represent a continual drain on resources to maintain. They have borders (state-on-state) but not frontiers)
Post anzeigenAnyway, I wish the forces of fragmentation in basically all strategy games were stronger. Most games should not feel like there is a global progression towards state consolidation, so much as a continuous push and pull, fragmentation and consolidation in waves.
Post anzeigenFor some eras (EU5 and Vicky3, for instance) that makes sense, but there are a lot of other periods where state fragmentation was really common! The number of sovereign states exploded from 1900 to 2000, from ~50 to ~200!
Post anzeigenInstead the relentless trend in grand strategy games (and 4X games) is state consolidation: relentlessly larger states that rarely if ever meaningfully fragment. Just bigger and bigger. That's not exactly the historical pattern!
