Funny thing about cheap bronze, e.g. of the kind used to make confederate statues: it really hates tomatoes. The juice from a tomato sets up a chemical reaction that causes cheap bronze to disintegrate. And once started - say, by throwing tomatoes at a statue - the reaction cannot be stopped.
