Now, the actual *good* outcome was lost when Lenin managed to overthrow the republic in the first place. At that point, it was really only a question of what kind of tyranny would prevail (the Whites would've fallen apart fast but the likely outcome is still tyranny under whoever was left standing).

The other thing is Stalin pretty quickly rolls back most of the anti-Russian chauvinism stuff Lenin had put into place and it accelerates as he consolidates his power within the Soviet apparatus to the point that he's bringing back a lot of explicitly Russian nationalist stuff from the Imperial era
