I like the slight gloss from the shellac but the grain depth from the BLO is also nice. I've had good luck with wax/shellac on top of oil to optimise both features.

BLO brings out more of the groan in anything as shellac is more of a surface treatment. I love both finishes. For me, it depends on how the pieces will be used - but both bowls are lovely!

I often use shellac on boxes to raise the grain, then lightly sand smooth and apply an oil. With bowls I don't bother but usually use Kunos oil or wax
