Start a conversation with the student and give my reasoning. It's a chance to remind them of ethical practices in academia. There's also usually problems with the text to discuss - such as straight plagiarism, irrelevant passages or made up sources - that mean the work can't get a passing grade.

My review of Olúfẹ́mi O. Táíwò’s much-praised book "Elite Capture: How the Powerful Took Over Identity Politics (and Everything Else)" just came out in Damage Magazine. I'm not a fan.
