I agree, but I'd rather we just chucked out the h-index entirely. Lots of papers are important for many reasons but not cited. Wish we would just read the damn things to check quality

"unusually high density of well-cited papers for their career stage" seems far more impressive than "has a big h", especially given how easy it is to game h
Show Postin psych, I've heard of a few search committees scrutinizing h and other publication metrics in this way, which, if one is going to use metrics at all, seems reasonable it's like seeing high total cites and then doing a sanity check on how many of those are legit and how many are self-cites
