The problem is, people who are choosing the estrangement are happier and more at peace without these people in their lives, and thinking/writing about them gives those people some of the power and emotional energy you cut them off from in the first place. We don’t care to rehash it.

I think it does relate to a fundamental reality: the large generational split in perspective that has been bubbling for over a decade now, and the fact that established journos are largely on one side of that divide.

Like, if a child really did cut off a parent for some insignificant slight, you’d see that behavior replicated in their other relationships. If the child has other long term relationships that are fine, there’s something specific going on with the parent that the parent is not capable of fixing

That’s the thing I keep coming back to. The parents who can’t describe why the estrangement happened are 100% unreliable narrators. And the ones who describe “petty” reasons aren’t that much likelier to be accurate
