Does this entire grotesque show collapse without its central character? Do we learn how to discuss politics in terms of policies, institutions, material conditions, competing interests, and actual consequences? Or has this become a permanent feature of American political life?

All of this is damaging to our intellectual, psychological, and political health. It trains us (all of us, whether or not we like and share) to mistake emotional gratification for understanding, repetition for evidence, and participation in a cheering section for meaningful political engagement.

It encourages a kind of politics in which the highest virtue is recognizing the villain, the highest intellectual achievement is repeating that he’s a villain, and the highest form of civic participation is clicking a little heart beneath a picture of that villain pissing himself.
