There is no sustainable way out from this freeway funding sinkhole w/o reducing vehicle miles traveled. This would simultaneously benefit traffic safety, environmental & human health issues, also w positive budget impacts. But unfortunately real fiscal conservancy doesn’t exist in US politics.

Now we're talking! They install metal ones at the entrances to bike/ped path, but plastic wherever a car might be damaged should a driver do something dumb. The situation should be reversed.
