"You didn't owe X" is very different from "You are sometimes able to spend hours of your life arguing your creditors into giving up on the claim that you owe X". In one of them, you can just go to sleep every night, in the other one, you have to fight to save your assets.

It's genuinely so weird to be like "You didn't owe a bunch of money, you just had a bill for that amount, and the hospital demanding that amount, and if you didn't personally spend hours of your life fighting it, the credit agencies and maybe a US court system would say you owe it"

It's not a mistake though. The health care industry is full of unethical and (should be) fraudulent billing and accounting practices. Double billing and over billing is done as they know some small percentage of people will just pay even if they legally aren't required to.

Yeah it's nothing to do with that - it's because you're claiming that being threatened with a 500k bill during a deeply traumatic moment has no material impact. It's not that you don't have kids, it's that you don't have empathy.
