The high orbits of GEO are too far away to see trails, especially because they are moving very slowly relative to the Earth’s surface. I am not sure about MEO satellites.

Depends on the orbit. If sufficiently low (e.g. LEO) the orbit will, with time, decay due to residual atmospheric drag and the junk will go for an uncontrolled re-entry. Higher, in MEO or GEO, the drag is too small and debris are basically forever unless deorbited manually.
