The way I've always put this is: Play well, so it can be recorded well. Record well so it can be edited well Edit well do it can be mixed well Mix well so it can be mastered well.

I have his book, or at least one of them. Learned about mastering when I took Recording Arts. Mastering wasn't quite part of the course, unfortunately, so his work was sort of thought of jokingly as the dark arts.

running this through music brain; something simple self oscillating with no external input is just boring one dimensional noise. for anything to grow and blossom into something actually interesting to experience, it needs external input. not interested in being a vacuous feedback loop of nothing.
