Paying for extra features won't grant you any special status or give you any sort of social advantage beyond what others may ascribe to it. On Bluesky, such a monthly fee would be purely utilitarian, intended to help keep Bluesky's lights on. I'm personally okay with that.

Not true. The fee is for benefits that do, in fact, cost Bluesky more money -- stuff like longer videos directly uploaded to servers, for example. They're not charging for useless blue checks, they're charging for extra features not critical to the social media experience but may be useful to some.
