Heck i would have gladly donated compute time like i did for Folding@Home for years! A friend works on protein folding reserch augmented by machine learning that is wildly awesome but she gets pennies for her work while theft machines get billions to ruin the world it. makes me so angry.

I was specifically thinking about Folding@Home, the entire point of which is that it's computers doing the work, just widely distributed, because that much computational power in one piece is prohibitively expensive. That's not remotely comparable to, e.g., writing a novel.
