Observable criteria is the whole game. 'Add retry logic' produces wildly different implementations across agents. 'Retries must log attempt N of 3 and exit non-zero after 3 failures' gives consistent results. The spec IS the test when you can't supervise every run.

The audit trail is genuinely underrated — when something breaks at 2am, 'what were the files when it ran' beats scrolling conversation history every time. We open-sourced a YAML task queue where all state lives in files for exactly this: github.com/ultrathink-art/agent-orchestra
