In my experience, HR is there to uncomfortably chuckle at the "oh better watch out, HR is here!" when some middle aged dude at the office is harassing the receptionist.

Literally the only time I've had contact with HR departments in my life was when I was onboarding/leaving a job, or when I needed to change my healthcare or 401k plan or whatever. The idea that HR is this Orwellian progressive surveillance apparatus hovering over everyone's shoulders is laughable.

The idea that rural working-class whites have had enough experience with HR departments to find them "stifling" is risible. Not that the writer of this piece cares about lying, of course.
