people turn around and ask "what rights are YOU willing to sacrifice" and almost never get an answer, but there's another way of looking at this, a much smaller ask. "are you willing to *feel bad* about voting for a bigot?" and no, they aren't. sitting with a little shame or guilt is too much.

even as they go about "it sucks but you gotta support the lesser evil", they so rarely can bring themselves to think "man it fucking sucks to have to vote for a bigot". that's not a 'lesser evil' they themselves are willing to sit with and process. so all the bigotry becomes just 'strategies'.

that's how you get the people who are willing to admit that yes, yes, it sucks that dems play into islamophobia, transphobia, and more, but what's really important for them to believe is they don't *mean* any of it. "i would never support a bigot" turning into reality denial instead of principles
