I met a girl during a mental hospital stay who was talking about being adopted and said, "My parents stand by me. They say they have to, because they can't have wasted $30,000." I think about that a lot.

this is an insight. thank you, meghan. i envy people whose parents cannot sensibly say “we chose you”, because those people do not feel the weight of an implicit obligation to be grateful for having been “chosen.” 🥚
