this raises the intriguing possibility that structural variants do not just control gene expression by changing the sequence and altering, say, binding sites, but also via changing the intergenerational inheritance profile of the underlying locus. There is much more in there- give it a look!

These range all the way from highly robust, to metastable, to highly fragile, such that any perturbation leads to near-permanent loss of a strongly silenced state. Remarkably, we also show that flavors of the epigenetic profiles are dictated by naturally occurring structural subtelomere variants.

Check out the original thread for the highlights- subtelomeric heterochromatin is fascinating, we show that distinct subdomains co-exist rather than one larger domain formed by spreading from the telomere proximal end. These show remarkably different genetic requirements and epigenetic states.
