💯 All the talk of "HK would have democracy now if the protesters hadn't thrown Molotovs" (which is meant to make a case for non-violent protest) is bunk. It spooked Beijing that 1 million+ ppl showed up at marches, and the harder the police cracked down and tear-gassed us, the more ppl joined. 1/7

The reason why Revolution Of Our Times failed wasn’t because Valiants were throwing petrol bombs. It’s because the rest of the city mobilised. To Beijing, woleifei gathering in malls singing Glory to HK was just as great, or even a greater, violence. We asked for democracy. We had to be crushed.

As an aside, one real challenge in teaching a language at the college level I am finding is that however bright, diligent and disciplined your students are, they do not see developing a language skill as an important part of being an educated, well-rounded person. They're box-checking.

Tombstone of a foreign merchant, Song dynasty, Quanzhou. There is Chinese writing: fanke mu 蕃客墓, lit. "Tomb of a foreign guest". The characters are written very unconventionally (some might say badly), so the writing seems to stem from a foreign craftsman.
