My mom pushes back before I open my mouth to say anything. She sees me as some freak of my generation who isn't like the others of my generation and it's like "no, we're mostly all like me." She just cannot process that idea.

That is an astoundingly dishonest response. Osama bin Laden literally laid out his justifications in a video he made before his death. Did they *have* to do 9/11? No. But they *chose* to do 9/11 specifically in response to our actions.
