Doing something fun and cool is fine. Context just matters a little. If it's a spectacle: great. If it's being sold as a product, then by round 100 of the “magician throws powder” routine, people may start wondering whether there is an actual competitive product hiding somewhere behind the smoke.

There are plenty of perfectly mundane reasons to find the show lame: it isn't really a “flying car”, it burns through its propellant in no time, and it's very unlikely to ever be street-legal. It looks much more like another investor stunt. No invented audience psychology required.
