the d’artagnan romances suffer from this so bad. i love them i read all of them but the reason all 3 musketeers adaptations are very loose is because most of their actual adventures involve witnessing historical events they were too late to prevent and sadly shaking their heads in disapproval

Many early novels, like Hawthorne's Scarlet Letter, did have framing devices (the Custom House Sketch) that helped readers suspend disbelief, because the concept of an entire fictional world was new and strange. That was 1850. Modern fiction is far beyond that and anybody says otherwise is a dope.
