when authoritarian dictators tell us that they see western ideas--not western militaries, not western economies, but western *ideas*--as the most existential threat to their regimes, we should see this not as paranoid rantings but cold, accurate analysis. because it's true!

that last kind of villain is just someone who immediately shoots someone dead instead of giving a speech, and just in general doesn’t show much hesitation or have much self-indulgence. they are some of scariest types
