How do you oversee the grant award policy of a NIH Institute/Center to achieve gold standard science if you’ve never been PI responsible for generating gold standard science? Or *any* science, for that matter.

It gets worse. From the NIH press release: "Dr. Gaitanis… currently serves on the board of the Medical Academy of Pediatrics and Special Needs (MAPS)." MAPS is the successor organization to "Defeat Autism Now!" — full-on, dangerous-to-patients pseudoscience; chelation "therapy," hyperbaric O2, etc.
