I remember first encountering the word waaaaaaaaaaaay back in the 90s with Fushigi Yuugi fansubs where the translator left it as "byouma" (in this case, tho, it kind of was literally a sickness-demon) I thought it was a series-specific term until I saw it come up in other things later

People often like translating a line in anime and manga as "stop staring so much". I really think the "so much" is unnecessary in English. There isn't an amount of staring that's acceptable when someone doesn't want to be stared at. "Stop staring" by itself is fine. "...at me" is fine too.
