Yeah I fell into a dumb habit of reporting hate speech that continually wouldn’t be taken down and that was when I knew I had to take a true step back (and I been on twitter since 2007!)

Cell phones and email and group texts also make it way more obvious. You can't just ghost anymore.

I knew people in the 1980s who were very clearly Not Speaking to their parents, but it was also possible to just dodge calls and talk once a month or less.

I guess the change is, in the 80s it was the pundits' grandparents (I am so old) getting cut off, and now it's the pundits and their social circle? Another job for Ask An Old Person! Somebody hack the legacy pubs' style guides and insert "do not publish before you've run this by someone over 60."

Remember: People have been cutting off their parents for centuries. It just used to be easier to disappear. Going to America? Bye! Settling the West? Bye! More recently, people have been cutting off their parents and telling them why using therapy terms since at least the 1980s.
