It seems to me the US press is built for an environment in which politicians mostly are trying to spin the underlying facts in favor of their political goals. It is not built for people who just manufacture reality out of thin air. That makes it virtually useless in our neofascist epoch.

One way to describe the failure of the press in our moment is their completely inability to engage in second order thinking. If you have enough status, you can tell the press anything and they will just dutifully repeat it. It doesn't matter if the last 100 things you have said have all been lies.

I think the WaPo “fact checkers” tallying Trump’s lies actually tells the story here. This is trying to put the Trump admin in a conventional framework where presidents occasionally bend the truth. Would anyone think it meaningful to count the number of lies per day that Hitler or Mussolini told?

The way they handle Trump is bad enough, but they are even MORE differential to the tech fascists. Elon spends his life making BS predictions, none of which ever pan out, and posting stuff from Stormfront message boards. No matter. He can still get the press to publish anything he wants verbatim.
