It was ever thus. In the early 70s my grandparents lived in Ambleside (on the road up to the Kirkstone Pass) and we used to drive to White Moss Common to go fell walking. The car park would be rammed, but you only had to go a couple hundred yards uphill and you’d be entirely alone.

All the solutions one can think of (lower speed limits, encouraging more use of public transport) will not eliminate the traffic, and in particular trucks serving commercial and industrial locations. Appreciate the terrain makes this even harder, but we need to make "bypass" be an option again
