It’s amazing just how many migrant birds use Sycamore as rest stops. They must provide abundant food!

A few Cambridge botanists had a theory that sycamore was possibly native in the far west of British Isles, sort of like a celtic ring species also native in Galicia, Brittany etc. as well. No idea if it was scientifically studied though.

Pretty much the only tree here in a sea of non-native willow and where pretty much all migrant passerines will be found cos it's the only one with an abundance of food. I'd be stuffed here without sycamores!

It's a tree that we're going to lose fairly soon with global warming - it needs cool, moist conditions to do well. It all but stopped regenerating naturally around here around 10-15 years ago or so, around the same time that warmth-loving Field Maple started self-sowing here.

I'm fairly ambivalent about Sycamores. Flowers are good for early pollinators, they host a lot of aphids for other species to feed on, and they generate good tree cavities for bats/birds (much better than Oak in that respect). And there's millions of them so we've got to live with them anyway.
