That's obviously nuts if one wants to measure the true strength of an economy. NEO sets the harms of activity - like a fireball accident or pollution AND the costs to deal with them - as negatives, not positives. As they should be.
Show PostWhen a chemical plant injures its workers or pollutes a community, the costs of dealing with the damage can actually increase GDP. Medical treatment, environmental cleanup, and other responses to industrial harm all generate measurable economic activity.

In 2021, researchers from Harvard and Birmingham/Leicester (UK) modeled the mortality impacts of air pollution. They attributed 355,000 deaths per year in the US to fine particulates from fossil fuel combustion (Table 1; 95% confidence interval: 212k to 490k). That's about 10% of all US deaths.
