Reform-run North Northamptonshire Council is the latest to propose rescinding the council's climate emergency declaration. The motion will likely pass, as Reform have a majority. Northamptonshire remains in a state of drought following the record-breaking temperatures over the summer.

Then the sector may (not unreasonably!!) feel aggrieved. After all, LGR has dominated sector discourse now since December 2024 when Government first announced its proposals, and has suffused parallel conversations about English devo, where the membership of new Mayoral SAs is predicated on LGR
Show PostIf LGR is going ahead that is not necessarily time wasted - the identification of assets and liabilities, review of contracts and strategies etc will be useful if this is just a delay by (for example) one year. But if the change results in dramatically different geographies or LGR is cancelled...
Show PostEmerging that Government will this afternoon announce plans to pause the process of English local government reorganisation pending a review. So where are councils now?
Show PostCouncils were planning for the establishment of shadow authorities next April, with existing / sovereign authorities being abolished in 2028. Reflecting this timetable councils have put in place significant resource to plan the process of transition.
