Update: Quick addendum to the historical timeline! Tuna Twist actually started its testing phase in Spring of 1975 in Kansas, and then Fall of 1975 in Florida, and also featured a bacon-flavored option. More widespread testing was launched in 1976, as I mentioned, by which point bacon was axed
Show PostDespite all of this, Tuna Twist enjoyed a decent run on grocery shelves, likely due to being released during a time of significant inflation and rise in costs, meaning families were more likely to reach for a product like this, sacrificing taste and quality in the name of stretching a budget
Show PostWhile all this was happening, independent market research groups were doing their own taste-testing, and results ranged from "mediocre" to "awful". Some reviewers did praise the economical and convenience factor, while most others noted a "funny taste", "green coloring" and "tough texture"
Show PostTuna Twist was then pulled from shelves in Los Angeles grocery stores, which is the only place it was being retailed, and nearly led to a public health crisis. However, Nabisco, despite acknowledging being flooded with complaint letters, assured health officials that their tests showed "no problem"
