I think some people eat it up because it goes down smoother this way. You don't have to figure out your feelings or sit with them. A little lampshading and the author sits outside the art with you, guiding you. "I'll provide the art, AND I'll provide the reaction" like the book has a laugh track.
Show PostAdding: this snark is never for audience benefit. If someone thinks the sci-fi is too weird or the horror is too discomforting, they can make their own jokes. Art doing that itself is to prevent others' jokes. The artist says "I'LL laugh so YOU can't make fun of me." And it's so spineless.
