SNL and the Rolling Thunder Revue launched 19 days apart in October 1975, only 6 months after the Vietnam War ended. That year’s film lineup is still staggering. Albums: “Born to Run,” “Horses,” “Tonight’s the Night,” “Wake Up Everybody,” “Blood on the Tracks,” “The Basement Tapes.” What a time.

Without Mel Brooks hiring Lynch to make THE ELEPHANT MAN — on the strength of ERASERHEAD alone — he is very likely just a guy who made a weird film at AFI. That whole filmography you love doesn’t happen. We all need sponsors and mentors and patrons. We need people who believe in us.

Not voting in the Oscars this year. IMHO they should cancel them. No glitz with Los Angeles on fire.
