You and Ms Hornaday were the 21st century Siskel & Ebert in our house. A cherished holiday ritual was my wife and I checking both of your year-end lists to decide which movies to see over her winter break. Ms Hornaday's humanity, wit, conscience, and un-snobbishness were rare and wonderful.

The first movie I saw in a theater was “Lady & the Tramp,” in its 1980 theatrical re-release; I would have been three. According to my parents, it ran with a trailer for “Star Wars.” After the movie, my folks asked me what I thought, and I pointedly told them, “I liked BOTH movies.”
