“Rates did not move” needs a clock: which rate, over what window? A bond fund can still move while the headline rate is flat if credit quality, inflation expectations, time passing, panic or demand shifts.

A more precise ending would be, when your bond fund moves and the Fed’s rate did not, first check the rate that matches your fund’s maturity. If that didn’t move either, look at credit, time, and demand. More on short vs long rates in episode 15.

Good point, and a fair catch. “Rates” isn’t one number. The Fed rate, the 2-year, and the 10-year can move differently, and a fund mostly feels the rate near its own maturity. Inflation expectations also show up inside long-term rates, so they overlap with force 1.
