100% this. When we lived in Boston, parents would call the police on kids riding their bikes to school alone. When we moved to Helsinki when our daughter was 10yo, she rode her bike to school alone as did most other children. I did the same in the 70s in the US. Cars are a prison, not freedom.

We've all experienced the, "Sorry, I almost killed you!" oopsie wave. There's a massive disconnect where drivers do not understand (and do not care about) the risk they pose to people outside of the car.

Forgiving infrastructure assumes people make mistakes. A person on a bike who loses their balance and falls shouldn't pay for it with their life just because there was no buffer between them and a vehicle 100 times their weight.
