Everyone I know who has cut off their parents as an adult has experienced violence or discrimination from their families. Queer people with MAGA voting dads. Child sexual abuse survivors whose moms didn’t believe them when they sought help.

People are not cutting off their parents because they had unfair expectations of perfection of them. But a defensive reaction to stories like these can be a red flag that you won’t be able to hear crucial feedback from your own kids if your behavior has hurt them.
